#PoweredByInvictus, runners complete the virtual London Marathon in aid of Invictus Games Foundation

Runners across the world recently took part in the virtual London Marathon on October 4th, with 58 of them running in aid of the Invictus Games Foundation!

Drawn from across the 20 participating nations of the Invictus Games, international wounded injured and sick Service personnel or veterans, and their supporters, family and friends, took to the streets as part of a virtual marathon, either as part of their recovery, or to fundraise and show their support for the Foundation – or in some cases both!

And whilst many of the runners will continue to fundraise up until their rescheduled London Marathon race over the next few years, the total raised so far from those fundraising is over £23,000!

At a time when charities are feeling the effects of the pandemic on fundraising activities, and when those the Invictus Games Foundation are working with to support with are finding it more difficult to use the power of sport in their recovery, these donations really do make a difference.

Jenni Anderson, Development Director at the Invictus Games Foundation, said “We had 58 runners from across the world taking part in the virtual London Marathon this year in aid of the Foundation, helping raise vital funds for the charity and supporting our work internationally!”

Runners who took part include former competitor Sally Orange, who ran a marathon within a Last-minute.com London Eye pod. Sally said “Running 26.2 miles in an isolated bubble seemed the perfect way to symbolise the ‘highs and lows’ or the ‘ups and downs’ that the pandemic has had on people and the associated need to reduce the stigma attached to poor mental health. Sport has always been a key factor for me to maintain my physical and mental fitness!”

Runners also took part from the Romanian Invictus Games team who used it as part of their team training. They shared how “working out is very important for the physical and mental recovery of their wounded military, which helps them move on from their injuries. ”

Some of Team Ukraine also took part, who’d like to thank their friends and family for their support:

Thanks go to all runners who took part, either as part of their recovery or in fundraising for the Invictus Games Foundation. If you would like to fundraise for us, get in touch at info@invictusgames.org!
