Invictus Games Foundation Wins Judges Special Recognition Award at Sun Military Awards

London, 22nd January 2016 – The Invictus Games Foundation was today honoured at the Sun Military Awards, which honours members of the British armed forces and civilians involved with the forces, with a Judges Special Recognition Award.

The award, which was presented by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, was given to the Foundation for inspiring a new generation of wounded, injured and sick (WIS) Servicemen and women across the globe through sport and competition.

The Invictus Games is an international adaptive sporting event for WIS men and women, both serving and veteran. The Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect of all those who serve their country.

Representatives from the Invictus Games Foundation as well as competitors from the 2014 Invictus Games were present to pick up the award.

Dominic Reid, Managing Director of the Invictus Games Foundation said: “The 2014 Invictus Games exceeded everyone’s expectations. Not only did they have a positive impact on the competitors and their families, but the levels of support shown by the general public were incredible. We set up the Foundation to continue giving wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women around the world the support they need on their recovery journey. I’m proud and delighted that the Foundation has been recognised for its work.”

Andy Grant, who won a Gold medal in athletics at the 2014 Invictus Games added: “The Invictus Games in 2014 was one of the best experiences in my life and really helped me in moving forward. If it wasn’t for the Invictus Games Foundation there wouldn’t be an Invictus Games and I know everyone really appreciates the work that goes on behind the scenes to help support us all.”

Two other 2014 Invictus Games competitors were nominated. Paul Vice, who won medals in archery and cycling and Dean Bousfield who won a bronze medal in athletics were nominated for the Overcoming Adversity Award. The award went to Dean Bousfield, who survived being shot through the brain by a sniper.

Following the success of the 2014 Invictus Games, the Invictus Games Foundation has been established to develop and pursue the event’s legacy. It manages the selection of the hosts for future games and oversees their delivery. In July 2015, the Foundation announced that the next Invictus Games would take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida from 8 – 12 May 2016.

The awards this year were hosted by Tom Bradby and were attended by the likes of Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Ben Fogle, Henry Cavill and Jeremy Clarkson. All nominees began their day at a Downing Street reception with Samantha Cameron before being bussed to the Guildhall for the award ceremony.
