Invictus Games Foundation appoints new Operations Director

The Invictus Games Foundation is delighted to announce the appointment of Richard Smith CBE as Operations Director. He will be joining the team from January 2019.

Richard has a military background, having served in the Army as a Brigadier and was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.  He coordinated the contribution of 18,000 military personnel to the security of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and also assisted in the planning of the security for the inaugural Invictus Games in London 2014.

Upon leaving the Army in December 2015 he was appointed Director of Operations at the Stamford Endowed Schools.

On learning of his appointment to the Invictus Games Foundation, Richard commented: “I am delighted and honoured to have been selected for this post. My experience in working with the inaugural Invictus Games in 2014 was both humbling and inspiring in seeing wounded and injured Service personnel from around the world coming together and finding a unity of spirit and purpose through sport.

In particular, I look forward to contributing to the Foundation’s core objectives of promoting the power of sport in the recovery and rehabilitation of injured and wounded Service personnel as well as developing a wider understanding internationally of the qualities and needs of these people”

Dominic Reid, CEO of the Invictus Games Foundation, added: “The outgoing Chief Operating Officer, Rose Hall, has done a fantastic job in building the Invictus Games into the largest international sporting competition for wounded, injured or sick Servicemen and women. We are excited to have Richard joining the team at the Invictus Games Foundation to be taking on the challenge of her legacy.

We know that Richard’s experience with the Olympics and the inaugural Invictus Games London 2014, as well as his time in the Army, will prove invaluable as we move forward towards Invictus Games The Hague 2020, and beyond.”
